Blackwood
Fruit Tree type: Coniferous (Stores water in its leaves)This enormous fruit tree grows up to 73 feet (22.3 meters) tall and lives for up to 10 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 35 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.
It has a sturdy, curved trunk covered in thick, smooth, black bark, and inside, the medium-dense wood is dark brown.
The branches are tall, rigid and upright and are covered with very large amounts of large, 4 pointed leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are cream with cyan tips.
In early spring, it produces handfuls of tiny, peach blossoms with kidney-shaped shaped petals. They detach easily and have a powerful scent that smells like varnish.
In mid-autumn it produces tiny, oval fruit. The waxy beige skin is stretchy and edible when boiled; it is sweet and spicy, and the very soft vivid yellow flesh is savoury and juicy. The black seed is very large and sits at the top of the fruit.
The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.
Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with grassy ground between them.
It is suitable for creating strong, durable textiles
It can grow in even the most barren lands.
