Turquoise

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This massive shrub grows up to 11 feet (3.4 meters) tall and lives for around 54 years. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has many very thick, straight stems covered in fine, ridged, brown and grey bark, and the wood inside is burgundy.

The branches are long and slender with dozens of twigs that and are covered with sparse amounts of huge, needle-like, leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are dull blue and turquoise, tough and leathery.

In early summer it produces handfuls of tiny, orange blossoms with triangular petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are hardy and have an intense scent that smells like a newborn baby.

In early autumn tiny circular fruits ripen. The smooth dull blue skin is stretchy and inedible, and the very soft vivid yellow flesh is sweet and dry. The gold seed is very large and sits at the end of the fruit.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
