Desert Trumpet Flower

Flower type: Annual (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This modest-sized flower grows up to 7 inches (18 cm) tall. Its brown stem is very thin and splits into 6 branching stems at the top, and the miniature, brown leaves are thick with smooth edges. The leaves grow from the base and are the same length as the stem.

Around 90 medium-sized flowers grow along the length of the stem. The flowers are 11 cm (4.3 inches) wide, with petals that are washed-out orange at the sides and slate at the center. The flower head is shaped like a trumpet made up of 8 raised, round-tipped petals. They are hardy.

It has an overpowering scent that smells like an ocean breeze, and it has very little pollen; it does not cause any allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.
