Burgundy Trumpet Flower

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This small flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its burgundy stems grow in bunches of 6 and are thick and straight, and the large, beige or orange leaves are perforated with smooth edges. A pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

A single small flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 6 cm (2.4 inches) wide, with faded yellow petals that gradient shift to magenta on the outer edge. The central disk is purple. The flower head is shaped like a trumpet with 42 raised, round-tipped petals. They fall easily.

It has a scent that varies in strength that smells like leather, and it has lots of pollen. It is a self-pollinator, but is also particularly attractive to bees.
