Watermelon Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This massive fruit tree grows up to 46 feet (14.0 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 34 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a sturdy, slanted trunk covered in thin, ridged, yellow bark, and inside, the soft wood is dark brown.

The abundance of branches trail down across the ground and are covered with handfuls of miniature, fan-like leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are solid light red with violet zig-zags.

In early spring, it produces handfuls of tiny, light brown blossoms with broad, flat petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They fall easily and have the faintest scent that smells like cherry.

In mid-autumn it produces small, spherical fruit. The soft violet skin is thick and inedible, and the soft peach flesh is bitter and sticky. The beige seed is very large and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with clear space between them.
