This short shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 29 years. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has many long and flexible, straight stems covered in thin, waxy, brown and grey bark, and the wood inside is dark brown.

The branches are short, rigid and upright with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with copious amounts of tiny, long, tapering, leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are green on the sides and white at the center, rigid and rough.

It produces several giant, lilac flowers with circular petals. They detach easily and have an intense scent that smells like vomit. In midwinter it forms smallred, spiky-shelled seeds.
