It has dozens of very thick, wavy stems covered in very thick, rough, black with white speckled bark, and the wood inside is brown.
The branches are tall, rigid and upright with thousands of twigs that and are covered with copious amounts of giant, stiff, pointed, leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are either brown or purple, with cream patches, robust and crispy.
It produces a thick sheet of small, purple flowers with oblong shaped petals. They are very delicate and have an overpowering scent that smells like honeysuckle. In early autumn it forms medium-sizedbrown seed pods.
