Silverwood

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This average-sized shrub grows up to 3 feet (91.4 cm) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 145 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has dozens of flexible, straight stems covered in very thick, smooth, black bark, and the wood inside is silver.

The branches trail down across the ground with thousands of twigs that and are covered with sparse amounts of miniature, needle-like, leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are found in bright yellow and lilac varieties, strong and fuzzy.

In late spring it produces several large, red blossoms with circular petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have a strong scent that smells like new books.

In midwinter large wide fruits ripen. The rubbery green skin is peel-able and inedible, and the crunchy beige flesh is savoury and very juicy. The red seed is very large and is in the centre of the fruit.

It commonly grows in large patches.
It is possible to grow it from cuttings.
It is suitable for making baskets and the like
