Saffron

Flower type: Annual (Stores water in its leaves)

This colossal flower grows up to 16.6 feet (5.1 meters) tall. Its yellow-green stems grow from the base of the plant in bunches of 6 and are very thin and straight, and split into numerous branching stems a quarter of the way up, and the giant, intense orange leaves are pleated with smooth edges. The leaves alternate on the stem.

2 to 7 large flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 67 cm (26.4 inches) wide, with solid red petals decorated with dark brown dots and a pale red central disk. The flower head is made up of dozens of petals in raised layers. They are sturdy.

It has a fairly strong scent that smells like bleach, and it has an average amount of pollen; it can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by the wind, but is also particularly attractive to insects.


It is suitable for use as a construction material
It is very rare outside of a particular area.
