Twistvine Pine
Fruit Tree type: Coniferous (Grows upwards by winding itself around other objects and plants.)This huge fruit tree grows up to 65 feet (19.8 meters) tall and lives for up to 45 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 63 years old. It is very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.
It has a slender, angular trunk covered in paper-thin, waxy, brown and grey bark, and inside, the soft wood is copper-coloured.
The branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with very large amounts of miniature, slender, pointed leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are generally indigo.
In early spring, it produces clusters of tiny, silver blossoms with 9 triangular shaped petals. They are hardy and have a mildly strong scent that smells like cheese.
In late summer it produces large, perforated fruit. The soft beige skin is thick and inedible, and the crunchy subtle blue flesh is savoury and oily. The light grey seeds are large and are scattered throughout the fruit.
The roots grow as a near perfect mirror of the tree above, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.
Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
A particular bird species likes to nest in it.
It is possible to grow it from cuttings.
It is suitable for making strong rope
