Salmonberry

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This huge fruit tree grows up to 67 feet (20.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 56 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a very thick, straight trunk covered in very thick, cracked, light brown bark, and inside, the very light wood is pine-coloured.

The branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with thick bunches of small, sickle shaped leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are bright green and beige.

In early spring, it produces lots of large, pink blossoms with pleated petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have a strong scent that smells like glue.

In early autumn it produces large, asymmetrical fruit. The clammy dull orange skin is peel-able and edible when roasted; it is overwhelmingly salty, and the very soft violet flesh is bitter and sticky. The red seed is large and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
