The very thin, waxy leaves reach up to 3 inches (8 cm) in length. They are either red, or violet with bold red splotches, and have serrated edges.
During late spring, the vine produces copious amounts of large violet flowers, and during the early autumn, after flowering, it produces a modest amount of small seed pods.
