Magenta

Shrub type: Deciduous (Grows upwards by clinging to almost any surface.)

This short shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 57 years. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has several wide, curved stems covered in very thick, wrinkled, brown-green speckled bark, and the wood inside is pine-coloured.

The branches are long and thin with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with small bunches of tiny, long, tapering, leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are found in black and florescent purple varieties, light and sticky.

In late summer it produces a handful of small, peach blossoms with many layers of petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are very delicate and have a soft scent that smells like faeces.

In mid-autumn slender, 7 pointed fruits ripen. The smooth magenta skin is stretchy and edible when roasted; it is sweet and salty, and the crunchy bronze flesh is slightly sour and very dry. The cream seed is small and is in the centre of the fruit.

It is often home to a particular bird species.
