Waterpine
Shrub type: Coniferous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This modest-sized shrub grows up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall and lives for around 30 years. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.
It has numerous long and flexible, crooked stems covered in fine, silky, brown-green bark, and the wood inside is light brown.
The branches are tall, rigid and upright with dozens of twigs that and are covered with handfuls of miniature, stiff, pointed, leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are brilliant blue at the bottom and beige with washed-out red lines at the top, fairly frail and leathery.
In mid-spring it produces many clusters of small, peach flowers with cylindrical shaped petals. They fall easily and have an overpowering scent that smells like onion.
It can absorb up to 13 times its own weight in water.
