Crimson Silverbell

Flower type: Annual (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short flower grows up to 5 inches (13 cm) tall. Its silver stems grow in bunches of 8 and are very thick with a curved tip, and the large, turquoise leaves are perforated with rounded edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.

Dozens of small flowers grow along the length of the stem. The flowers are 4 cm (1.6 inches) wide, with solid crimson petals decorated with blood red dots and a grey central disk. The flower head is made up of 11 petals in raised layers. They fall easily.

It has a faint scent that smells like rainy days, and it has copious amounts of pollen, but it does not cause any allergic reactions. It is a self-pollinator, but is also visited by a small species of bird.
