Salty Carambola

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This average-sized fruit tree grows up to 15 feet (4.6 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 78 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a flexible, straight trunk covered in paper-thin, knobbly, burgundy and brown bark, and inside, the very dense wood is pine-coloured.

The branches trail down across the ground and are covered with large amounts of giant, wispy leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are found in olive, pastel purple and green varieties.

In early spring, it produces a thick sheet of small, azure blossoms with 6 spiral shaped petals. They fall easily and have a soft scent that smells like marzipan.

In early winter it produces small, slender, 3 pointed fruit. The fuzzy orange skin is delicate and salty, and the soft black flesh is salty and powdery. The caramel seed is tiny and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
