This brown moss is commonly found blanketing tiny areas On trees.
It is small, growing up to 3 inches (8 cm) tall. It forms in large clumps and they overwhelm an area rapidly, and is slightly frail; it takes a lot of damage when trodden on.
When mature, emerald kidney-shaped capsules grow at the end of long, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the mid-summer to release millions of spores; it can cause severe allergic reactions.

It aggressively steals nutrients from other large plants (but not each other).
It is suitable for creating fine, soft textiles
The petals are bland but very healthy
