Purple Starburst
Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This short caudiciform grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall. The asymmetrical stem is dull green or bold red, and is covered in large amounts of rigid black spines. The angular, black trunk can grow to as much as 1 foot (30.5 cm) in diameter in the middle. Its emerald branches are long, thin and wispy and start growing three quarters of the way up the stem.
The large amounts of smooth-edged, stiff, pointed leaves are either purple, or silver with gold streaks. They are resilient, and take little effort to detach.
It is very slow growing, taking 28 years to reach maturity. Once mature, and only under the right conditions, several flowers with solid green petals and an orange central disk grow at the top, reappearing after 3 years, but only when the conditions are right again. The flower head is made up of 19 petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight star. It has a weak scent that smells like cherry.
The caudiciform's skin is thin, the crimson flesh is rough, and the vibrant green sap is thin and can kill if consumed.
It is possible to grow it from cuttings.
