Bloodviolet

Flower type: Biennial (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This average-sized flower grows up to 1.7 feet (51 cm) tall. Its moss green and copper stem is thick and straight with a curved tip, and the giant, red leaves are spear shaped with rounded edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.

Each stem splits 3 to 6 times; a single giant flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 6 cm (2.4 inches) wide, with petals that are generally violet; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour. The flower head is shaped like a heart made up of 19 widely spaced, round-tipped petals. They are hardy.

It has a fairly strong scent that smells like blood, and it has very little pollen; it does not cause any allergic reactions. It is pollinated by insects , but is also visited by a small species of bird.

It is suitable for making paper
