Bluebell Cactus

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in its stem)

This short flower grows up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall. Its yellow stems grow in bunches of 3 and are thick and straight, and the miniature, moss green leaves are slender, pointed with rounded edges. The leaves alternate on the stem from the base up to about halfway.

6 to 8 small flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 8 cm (3.1 inches) wide, with petals that are generally sky blue; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour. The flower head is largely flat with several widely spaced round-tipped petals. They fall easily.

It has a delicate scent that smells like warm cookies, and it has an average amount of pollen. It is a self-pollinator.

It is often home to a particular bird species.
