Waterleaf

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This modest-sized shrub grows up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall and lives for around 21 years. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has several flexible, twisting stems covered in knobbly, brown-green speckled bark, and the wood inside is yellow-brown.

The branches trail down to the ground with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with thick bunches of tiny, thick, leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either dark grey or black, with drab red streaks, strong and rough.

In mid-summer it produces clusters of small, violet flowers with asymmetrical petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have a soft scent that smells like candle wax.

It is suitable for making baskets and the like
