This burgundy moss is commonly found blanketing small areas In marshes.
It is big, growing up to 9 inches (23 cm) tall. It forms in thick clumps and they overwhelm an area rapidly, and is overwhelmingly robust; it can easily endure flooding and draughts.
When mature, emerald spiral capsules grow at the end of elongated, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early summer to release thousands of spores; it does not cause many allergic reactions.
