Pink Spike Succulent
Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This huge caudiciform grows up to 29 feet (8.8 meters) tall. The slender, pointed stem is pink-red, and is covered in thousands of rigid cyan spines. The straight, brown trunk can grow to as much as 29 feet (8.8 meters) in diameter at the bottom. Its red branches are very short and thin and start growing at the base the stem.
The handfuls of ripped-edged, fan-like leaves are pink and lilac. They are light, and do not detach easily.
It is very slow growing, taking 26 years to reach maturity. Once mature, and only under the right conditions, several flowers with alternating petals of lime and red, with a grey central disk grow at the top, reappearing after 9 years, but only when the conditions are right again. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of up to 10 petals. It has a soft scent that smells like mango.
The caudiciform's skin is nearly impenetrable, the lime flesh is slimy, and the pink sap is thin.
The leaves have medicinal properties.
