Caramel Tube Flower

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in its leaves)

This modest-sized flower grows up to 1.5 feet (46 cm) tall. Its pink-red stem is very thick and straight, and the large, red leaves are grey on the underside and are very thick with irregular edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.

Each stem splits 2 to 6 times; a single medium-sized flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 22 cm (8.7 inches) wide, with petals that are generally caramel; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour. The flower head is shaped like a tube made up of many raised, narrow petals. They are hardy.

It has a scent whose strength depends on external factors, such as soil quality and rain frequency that smells like cigarette smoke, and it has very little pollen. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is also visited by a variety of insects.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
The sap is edible and very salty.
