Brown Trumpet Lily

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in its stem)

This average-sized flower grows up to 1.8 feet (53 cm) tall. Its green stem is very thick, and the tiny, orange-yellow leaves are dark brown on the underside and are spear shaped with serrated edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.

Dozens of small flowers grow in a bunch at the end of the stem. The flowers are 13 cm (5.1 inches) wide, with petals that are generally dark brown; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour. The flower head is shaped like a trumpet with 42 raised, round-tipped petals. They fall easily.

It has a weak scent that smells like sugar, and it has very little pollen, but can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by insects and is particularly attractive to a specific species.

The sap is edible and overwhelmingly spicy.
