Burgundy Bloodflower
Flower type: Annual (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This modest-sized flower grows up to 1.2 feet (36 cm) tall. Its pink-red stem is very thick and splits into numerous branching stems at the base, and the tiny, burgundy leaves are needle-like with ripped edges. The leaves grow from the base and are the same length as the stem.
3 to 6 medium-sized flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 30 cm (11.8 inches) wide, with solid dull green petals decorated with red dots and a copper central disk. The flower head is shaped like a bowl with 21 widely spaced, round-tipped petals. They detach easily.
It has a delicate scent that smells like blood, and it has very little pollen. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.
It is suitable for use as a construction material
