Bluecrest Agave

Succulent type: Leaf succulent (Stores water in its leaves)

This huge leaf succulent grows up to 121 feet (36.9 meters) tall. The fan-like stem is red, and is covered in sharp spines. The knobbly leaves are dull red on the sides and washed-out purple at the center. Small amounts of them grow on thick, gnarled, gray branches that are long and thick. The leaves are strong, and easily come away when pulled.

It is slow growing, taking 3 years to reach maturity. Once mature, several flowers with petals that are intense blue at the sides and copper at the center grow at the top, reappearing every year. The flower head is largely flat with several raised round-tipped petals. It has an intense scent that smells like new books.

The leaf succulent's skin is thin, the gentle orange flesh is sticky, and the bronze sap is thin.

It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
It makes excellent hedges.
