Thornberry

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This massive shrub grows up to 11 feet (3.4 meters) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 130 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has many sturdy, straight stems covered in fine, rough, pine-coloured bark, and the wood inside is brown.

The branches are short and thin with dozens of twigs that and are covered with very large amounts of small, pleated, leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are either slate or purple, with blood red patches, resistant and sticky.

In early spring it produces lots of tiny, grey blossoms with sickle shaped petals with a tube-like floral cup. They fall easily and have a delicate scent that smells like coconut.

In late autumn small broad, flat fruits ripen. The crispy violet skin is thin and sour, and the crunchy amber flesh is sweet and very juicy. The caramel seed is tiny and sits at the end of the fruit.

It is suitable for making strong rope
The trunk and branches are covered in large spikes.
