Bloodthorn
Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This short flower grows up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. Its blood red stem is very thick and straight with a curved tip, and the small, bold purple leaves are dark yellow on the underside and are asymmetrical with irregular edges. The leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.
Each stem splits 1 to 4 times; a single small flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 8 cm (3.1 inches) wide, with each petal a slightly different shade of white. The flower head is shaped like a sphere made up of 13 raised, narrow petals. They are sturdy.
It has a weak scent that smells like freshly baked bread, and it has very little pollen, but can cause allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is also particularly attractive to bees.
The stems are covered in large spikes.
