A single tiny flower sits at the end of each stem. The flowers are 35 cm (13.8 inches) wide, with solid brown petals decorated with indigo lines and a gold central disk. The flower head is made up of 23 petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight star. They fall easily.
It has a powerful scent that smells like something putrid, and it has very little pollen, but can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by the wind, but is also particularly attractive to insects.
