Copper Starflower

Flower type: Annual (Stores water in its stem)

This average-sized flower grows up to 1.1 feet (33 cm) tall. Its yellow stem is very thick and straight, and the miniature, copper leaves are needle-like with toothed edges. Many leaves grow along the entire length of the stem.

6 to 8 large flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 4 cm (1.6 inches) wide, with petals that are dark brown at the sides and brown at the center. The flower head is shaped like a star with 32 raised, round-tipped petals. They fall easily.

It has a soft scent that smells like ashes, and it has very little pollen; it does not cause any allergic reactions. It is pollinated by insects and is enjoyed by several specific types of insect.

It grows well in the sun and full shade.
The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
