Copper

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This modest-sized flower grows up to 1.0 foot (30 cm) tall. Its copper and slate stem is very thick and straight with a curved tip, and the tiny, yellow leaves are slender, pointed with toothed edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and a pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

3 to 5 small flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 25 cm (9.8 inches) wide, with petals that are blue at the sides and orange at the center. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of 31 curved petals. They fall easily.

It has an intensely strong scent that smells like sweat, and it has very little pollen, but can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by the wind, but is also visited by one species of insect in particular.
