Succulent type: Stem succulent (Stores water in its stem)This modest-sized cactus grows up to 48 feet (14.6 meters) tall. The pleated stem is yellow, and is covered in many rigid intense red spines.
It is steady-growing, taking 19 months to reach maturity. Once mature, several flowers with petals that are grey at the sides and lime at the center grow at the top, reappearing once every 5 years. The flower head is shaped like a trumpet made up of 7 widely spaced, round-tipped petals. It has a delicate scent that smells like fruity.
The cactus's skin is thick, the turquoise flesh is slimy, and the brown sap is thin.
It is suitable for use as a construction material
The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
The sap is edible and very sweet.
It comes in 15 varieties, each with a different leaf colour.
It is said to be able to live for hundreds of years.
