Crimson Fireflower
Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This big flower grows up to 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) tall. Its emerald stem is very thick and straight with a curved tip, and the large, pink-red leaves are flame-shaped with tattered edges. A pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.
A single large flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 10 cm (3.9 inches) wide, with each petal a slightly different shade of crimson. The flower head is made up of several petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight sphere. They are sturdy.
It has a strong scent that smells like damp, and it has very little pollen. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is also particularly attractive to butterflies.
