This burgundy moss is commonly found growing in medium-sized clumps On rotten logs, and In moorlands.
It is small, growing up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. It forms in large clumps and they spread and grow quickly, and is very durable.
When mature, emerald kidney-shaped capsules grow at the end of long, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the late autumn to release dozens of spores.

It is suitable for creating fine, soft textiles
The bark, wood and leaves are edible.
The sap causes severe rashes
It is said to be able to live for hundreds of years.
