This red moss is commonly found growing in medium-sized clumps In marshes, In bogs, and In damp forests.
It is average-sized, growing up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall. It forms in large clumps, and is overwhelmingly flimsy.
When mature, emerald cylindrical capsules grow at the end of long, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early winter to release dozens of spores.

It usually houses a colony of beneficial insects.
It is suitable for creating fine, soft textiles
It is extremely resistant to fire damage.
