Caramel Spine Succulent
Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This small caudiciform grows up to 12 feet (3.7 meters) tall. The wide stem is red, and is covered in brittle hazel spines. The bulbous, caramel trunk can grow to as much as 12 feet (3.7 meters) in diameter. Its gray-green branches are short, rigid and upright.
The jagged-edged, triangular leaves are found in beige and slate varieties. They are flimsy, but take some effort to detach.
It is steady-growing, taking 4 years to reach maturity. Once mature, and only under the right conditions, several flowers with petals that are sky blue in the center, crimson in the middle and hazel at the edges grow at the top, reappearing after 2 years, but only when the conditions are right again. The flower head is shaped like a bowl with 43 widely spaced, narrow petals. It has a weak scent that smells like warm milk.
The caudiciform's skin is tough, the cyan flesh is leathery, and the silver sap is thin.
