Azure Spined Sunburst
Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This average-sized caudiciform grows up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall. The perforated stem is azure, and is dotted with small bright orange spines. The straight, faded red trunk can grow to as much as 4 feet (1.2 meters) in diameter in the middle. Its brown branches are short stubs and start growing three quarters of the way up the stem.
The thick bunches of smooth-edged, 9 pointed leaves are vibrant green on the sides and gold at the center. They are light, and take some effort to detach.
It is steady-growing, taking 14 months to reach maturity. Once mature, and only under the right conditions, a single flower with petals that are generally deep yellow; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour grows at the top, reappearing after 2 years, but only when the conditions are right again. The flower head is made up of many petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight bowl. It has a delicate scent that smells like soap.
The caudiciform's skin is nearly impenetrable, the crimson flesh is soft, and the muted orange sap is thin and can kill if consumed.
Their seeds have hallucinogenic properties.
